And every year there's some sort of dessert contest: cheesecake, brownies, pies. This year the contest was cookies.<br />
<br />
I never enter these things because there are some serious bakers in our group and the competition is too stiff. But this year I thought I'd at least give it a shot, with help from my 3D printer.<br />
<br />
Here's the park's logo, found on their website:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.cacaponresort.com/etc/header.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.cacaponresort.com/etc/header.jpg" height="142" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I imported the above image into SketchUp, and did some tracing, mostly using the 2 Point Arc tool. I put the whole thing inside an oval-shaped border, and came up with this initial model. The letters are 4 mm tall, and the cutout border is 10 mm high.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4lo2eX34YI/VV34qFo6tNI/AAAAAAAACuE/37a0qXO7EnE/s1600/Model1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4lo2eX34YI/VV34qFo6tNI/AAAAAAAACuE/37a0qXO7EnE/s320/Model1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And at the last minute I remembered that the impression will be a mirror image, so I used the Scale tool to flip the letters the other way. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bteykItTBNA/VV34rqf6e6I/AAAAAAAACuM/i-mnz8Fr4lY/s1600/Model2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bteykItTBNA/VV34rqf6e6I/AAAAAAAACuM/i-mnz8Fr4lY/s320/Model2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I printed this out on my <a href="http://www.afinia.com/" target="_blank">Afinia H-Series printer</a>, which took about an hour. I didn't bother removing the raft (the supports at the bottom of the cutter) since that part of the cutter wouldn't touch any dough.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nYRm6Jxl8PA/VV35c7wBDeI/AAAAAAAACug/dobOYGPlxpg/s1600/photo%2B3%25287%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nYRm6Jxl8PA/VV35c7wBDeI/AAAAAAAACug/dobOYGPlxpg/s320/photo%2B3%25287%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I tried using this cutter with sugar cookie dough. Two problems: One, it's very hard to extricate the cutter from sticky dough, and little bits of dough get stuck between the letters. (Non-stick spray helped with this.) And the next problem is that even for those pre-baked cookies that looked good on the baking sheet, once they heated up, the dough flattened out a bit and the letters became too faint to read. Oh well. We had some great-tasting, blob-shaped cookie rejects. (Good thing I have five kids - none of these rejects remained after 10 minutes.)<br />
<br />
So thanks to Google, I discovered that the best cookie for impressions is shortbread - there's no leavening agents so nothing rises or spreads. (I guess that should have been obvious.) I found this <a href="http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/shortbread-recipe" target="_blank">amazingly simple recipe from King Arthur Flour</a>, adding a bit of lemon extract (yum!). I also used salted Plugra butter - I tried a few iterations with different brands and this was by far the best. Who'd have thought butter quality would make such an enormous difference. (I guess serious bakers know this stuff.)<br />
<br />
So I tried the cutter again. Again, too hard to get the cutter away from the dough. Then the light bulb popped on over my head and I realized the cookies needed <i>two </i>cutters - one for the oval shape, one for the letters. So I split up the SketchUp model into two separate parts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DZrHBBEKsKE/VV34rjxJ8hI/AAAAAAAACuQ/Va_YvbqkT-Y/s1600/Model3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DZrHBBEKsKE/VV34rjxJ8hI/AAAAAAAACuQ/Va_YvbqkT-Y/s320/Model3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And here are the two parts printed (with their rafts still attached):<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gl3JL6G11PQ/VV35c3XU-5I/AAAAAAAACuo/x1-TwE40-M0/s1600/photo%2B2%25287%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gl3JL6G11PQ/VV35c3XU-5I/AAAAAAAACuo/x1-TwE40-M0/s320/photo%2B2%25287%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a> </div>
<br />
Each cookie was made in two steps: cut the oval shape, then imprint on top. With just a bit of water at the top of the dough, the dough almost never stuck to the letters.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the final results - some turned out better (smoother) than others, but all are pretty easy to read.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Y-hMH7wYh4/VV35c2acQJI/AAAAAAAACuc/vWA_V-9Q8bg/s1600/photo%2B1%25288%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Y-hMH7wYh4/VV35c2acQJI/AAAAAAAACuc/vWA_V-9Q8bg/s320/photo%2B1%25288%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
They tasted amazing (in my humble opinion), and though they didn't win, I did garner a few votes. But everyone said I'd get the tech award, if there was one. And there's always next year....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DZrHBBEKsKE/VV34rjxJ8hI/AAAAAAAACuQ/Va_YvbqkT-Y/s1600/Model3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>

SketchUp is changing the way older software versions access outside applications, namely Google Earth and the 3D Warehouse.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/3000177" target="_blank">You can read details here.</a><br />
<br />
If you use SketchUp 2014 or 2015, there are no changes.<br />
<br />
If you use SketchUp 8 or 2013, you won't be able to access the 3D Warehouse using the Get Models tool, or through the Components window. Though you can always download models from the 3D Warehouse website, then import them into your SketchUp model. If you use geolocation features, you won't have access to Google Earth features, including street view photos.<br />
<br />
If you don't mind a bit of hacking, you can make manual changes to your sketchup.dat file, which will restore some functionality to older versions, once the "break" occurs on June 1. <a href="http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/3000180" target="_blank">Instructions are here</a> - they're not too complicated.<br />

Today I created a new video, after a long video hiatus. The topic is SketchUp for Interior Design, and the video shows how to import furniture and accessories into a 3D space (our newly renovated basement!), as well as how to explore two different ways of arranging objects in the space.<br />
<br />
<br />
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_NkHVOF01G8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br />
<br />
The techniques shown in this video are from my book <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SSS_InteriorDesign_PDF.html" target="_blank">Modeling with SketchUp for Interior Design</a>. <br />
<br />
Soon I'll be creating a shorter version for SketchUp's YouTube channel, but please enjoy the long version! <br />

If you have SketchUp Pro then you have LayOut as well - the awesome presentation tool that helps you showcase your SketchUp models. Basically, LayOut is SketchUp's presentation tool - bring in a SketchUp model, show different views and sections, apply dimensions, create templates and title blocks - everything you need to wow a client.<br />
<br />
And now, <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/index.php?ns=prodshow&ref=SU2015LO_PDF" target="_blank">you've got a book</a> that shows you all you need to know to use LayOut to the fullest. As always, I use step-by-step, hands-on exercises that will get you using the program, not just reading about it. Work through each project, and you'll become an expert in just 220 pages!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodxl/LayOut2015Cover_Web.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodxl/LayOut2015Cover_Web.png" height="400" width="310" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My last LayOut release was in 2013 (sorry, I skipped over 2014), and the 2015 version has lots of improvements and new content - it's about 45 pages longer.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3dvinci.net/SketchUp2015LayOut_Sampler.pdf" target="_blank">Here's a PDF with the table of contents and some sample pages.</a> <br />
<br />
Some highlights: <br />
<ul>
<li>A quick intro chapter, resulting in a two-page presentation with several views of a chair</li>
<li>How to use SketchUp scenes and layers to prepare LayOut views </li>
<li>How to use section planes (for both slicing and hiding objects)</li>
<li>How to use LayOut layers for working drawings</li>
<li>Creating standard SketchUp and LayOut files for streamlined presentations </li>
<li>All kinds of dimensions, text blocks, and labels</li>
<li>Creating templates and title blocks, complete with auto-text (dates, page numbers, etc.)</li>
<li>How to render your SketchUp view</li>
<li>How to edit SketchUp edges and faces in LayOut</li>
<li>How to create all sorts of shapes in LayOut</li>
<li>Clipping: both in LayOut (trimming around a shape) and in SketchUp (controlling what appears in a SketchUp scene</li>
<li>Applying patterns, hatching, materials to faces in LayOut</li>
<li>"Smart" labels - identifying attributes of components, dynamic components, and classified (BIM) components</li>
</ul>
If you have SketchUp Pro and haven't tried LayOut yet, you're missing out. This deceptively simple program can create knock-your-socks-off presentations. <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SU2015LO_PDF.html" target="_blank">Get the book</a> to see how it's all done!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XazMNdOnsjk/VMaLOx6-6sI/AAAAAAAACqc/0uMeauSrdpk/s1600/Uke1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XazMNdOnsjk/VMaLOx6-6sI/AAAAAAAACqc/0uMeauSrdpk/s1600/Uke1.png" height="235" width="400" /></a></div>
(The table is great also but was downloaded from the 3D Warehouse.)<br />
<br />
Stuart's teacher, Peter Kalajian of Maine's <a href="http://watershed-school.org/" target="_blank">Watershed School</a>, had this to say about the project:<br />
<blockquote>
I
work with really fine and interested students at the high school level at a
small (28 student) high school in Camden, Maine. We
spent an entire semester (5 hours per week) working on this project
after about a month of going through your book. I brought the uke to
class, so students had to share it to do all the measurements. The
idea was to stick with one hard project for the entire semester,
collaborate on solutions, and generally stay very focused during class. <br />
<br />
Stuart
had done some work with SketchUp before, so he got the furthest along. Out of a class of 9 all but two made complete models, some
without strings. In general it was a great class. </div>
</blockquote>
<br />
Here's a close-up - the shape and form look perfect to me. In this view, all edges are hidden.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U4fsEdcWpEQ/VMaLOw4HboI/AAAAAAAACqg/7rvXquA_IPQ/s1600/Uke2.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U4fsEdcWpEQ/VMaLOw4HboI/AAAAAAAACqg/7rvXquA_IPQ/s1600/Uke2.png" height="198" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The details at the top include a brand-name, courtesy of the 3D Text tool: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4bZVDxF7zA/VMaLOpjP1uI/AAAAAAAACqY/QXtl3GqnKPc/s1600/Uke3.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4bZVDxF7zA/VMaLOpjP1uI/AAAAAAAACqY/QXtl3GqnKPc/s1600/Uke3.png" height="320" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
This is my favorite aspect of this model - look at the pegs and how the strings wind on them. The frets are nicely spaced, and are clearly sticking up from the neckboard.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ntIPHst8tas/VMaLPS6a9aI/AAAAAAAACqk/psjdnFaemSo/s1600/Uke4.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ntIPHst8tas/VMaLPS6a9aI/AAAAAAAACqk/psjdnFaemSo/s1600/Uke4.png" height="264" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
With edges and hidden edges turned on, you can see the interesting detail in the strings and pegs. The strings are cylinders wrapped in a spiral pattern - not the easiest thing to do in SketchUp.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hZcHjAFroGY/VMaMuzSLotI/AAAAAAAACq8/VSTe2zcUhJI/s1600/Uke5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hZcHjAFroGY/VMaMuzSLotI/AAAAAAAACq8/VSTe2zcUhJI/s1600/Uke5.png" height="276" width="320" /></a></div>
Beautiful work, I hope Peter gave Start an A on this project :)<br />

<div class="post-header">
</div>
I still have on my "to-do" list an update for my LayOut book, as well as a speciality book on LayOut real-world case studies. But in the meantime, if you need to get your LayOut 2015 skills in gear, read on! <br />
<br />
I've written a few times about Matt Donley (aka "MasterSketchUp") since he first published his <i>SketchUp to LayOut</i> e-book in 2013. Matt's webstore is <a href="https://getdpd.com/cart/hoplink/19405?referrer=jo8eoll99b4kw0co80" target="_blank">SketchUp to LayOut</a>, where he sells his book and training packages. And his materials are all fully updated for SketchUp 2015!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sketchuptolayout.com/images/3DBook.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.sketchuptolayout.com/images/3DBook.png" /></a></div>
There are three packages on offer, which you can view at the very bottom of the <a href="https://getdpd.com/cart/hoplink/19405?referrer=jo8eoll99b4kw0co80" target="_blank">SketchUp to LayOut</a> page: <br />
<ul>
<li>The <b>Basic Package</b> contains the 288 page e-book.</li>
<li>The <b>Professional Package</b> includes the book, plus an
assortment of materials, hatch patterns, templates, styles, and LayOut
scrapbooks. This package also includes discounts for other plugins and
tutorials.</li>
<li>The <b>Video Course</b> includes all of the above, plus over three hours of instructional video you can stream or download.</li>
</ul>
Also worth checking out: Matt's <a href="http://www.mastersketchup.com/" target="_blank">MasterSketchUp</a>
site. This is mainly a blog with a wealth of modeling tips and tricks. The latest tips have to do with integrating plugins (extensions) from 2014 to 2015. Lots of good stuff in there!

If you're a chemistry or physics teacher (or student), give this a try.<br />
<br />
Open SketchUp and click the <b>Extension Warehouse</b> icon. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RANrWINQNeo/VEZn7NQbGeI/AAAAAAAACnY/cuZP8P6zIaM/s1600/Molecule1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RANrWINQNeo/VEZn7NQbGeI/AAAAAAAACnY/cuZP8P6zIaM/s1600/Molecule1.png" /></a></div>
Search for "Molecule" and install the Molecule Importer plugin. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HC9-_P2WEN0/VEZn7WJ2raI/AAAAAAAACnc/av2a-V5Tn6A/s1600/Molecule2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HC9-_P2WEN0/VEZn7WJ2raI/AAAAAAAACnc/av2a-V5Tn6A/s1600/Molecule2.png" height="237" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
(According to the description, this plugin isn't listed as updated for SketchUp 2014, and you'll see a message about that when you install it. It seems to work fine,though.) <br />
<br />
It appears that this plugin will create models from files of several types of formats, but the format mentioned in the plugin's description is MOL. A quick Google search led me to <a href="http://cccbdb.nist.gov/mdlmol1.asp" target="_blank">this NIST site</a>, where you can enter a molecule name and get its geometric layout as a MOL file. <br />
<br />
I entered H2SO4 (sulfuric acid), one of the few molecules I actually remember from high school and college.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WA8G5iak-Lw/VEZn7a73DUI/AAAAAAAACng/pa19IATqPfU/s1600/Molecule3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WA8G5iak-Lw/VEZn7a73DUI/AAAAAAAACng/pa19IATqPfU/s1600/Molecule3.png" height="160" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After clicking "Submit," I got a list of MOL files. I studied civil engineering, with pretty minimal chemistry training, so I have no idea what the various options are. I just clicked on the first one on the list.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3tvAfXPvrn0/VEZn7q9X_7I/AAAAAAAACoQ/_1k9EoZtCww/s1600/Molecule4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3tvAfXPvrn0/VEZn7q9X_7I/AAAAAAAACoQ/_1k9EoZtCww/s1600/Molecule4.png" height="256" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The text in the window that appears is the contents of the MOL file. So I copied and pasted all of the text into Notepad, and saved it as a file named H2SO4.mol.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q-I0o0XqWBg/VEZn7_4cRCI/AAAAAAAACno/35tjvYAvfpM/s1600/Molecule5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q-I0o0XqWBg/VEZn7_4cRCI/AAAAAAAACno/35tjvYAvfpM/s1600/Molecule5.png" height="353" width="400" /></a></div>
In SketchUp, the plugin has added more format options that you should see when using <b>File / Import</b>. But when I tried imported the MOL file this way, it didn't work. (Maybe that's what worked in previous versions but not 2014.) But you can also access the plugin through the main menu: choose <b>Plugins / Molecule Importer / Import MDL Molfile</b>.<br />
<br />
Here's my molecule: 2 hydrogens, one sulfur, four oxygens. All are the correct size, at least relative to one another, and the bonds are represented as well. I assume the layout is correct - NIST should know these things, right? If you measure the actual size, the entire molecule is about 30' long. I'm thinking this would be amazing to create on a 3D printer, which means a pretty major resizing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bCwYOcmJK8s/VEZn8JPkLDI/AAAAAAAACns/IQfGFbo4HkQ/s1600/Molecule6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LGf735GoAGg/VEZn8d7hYsI/AAAAAAAACnw/17kDDOn9b-M/s1600/Molecule7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LGf735GoAGg/VEZn8d7hYsI/AAAAAAAACnw/17kDDOn9b-M/s1600/Molecule7.png" height="247" width="320" /></a></div>
Another issue that will arise when 3D printing: if you look at the model in X-Ray view, you'll see that the bonds are too long - they hit each other inside the spheres. So they'd have to be edited and shortened. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q-6Q9eMhTrI/VEZn8mO4E7I/AAAAAAAACn0/X1Vy4mE0RRk/s1600/Molecule8.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q-6Q9eMhTrI/VEZn8mO4E7I/AAAAAAAACn0/X1Vy4mE0RRk/s1600/Molecule8.png" height="279" width="320" /></a></div>
Also, how to print the spheres? Stay tuned for a (hopefully) upcoming post...

(I remember when you had to run a render overnight and check it out over coffee the next day. Now you can get great images in seconds or minutes.) <br />
<br />
I ran across this on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sketchupartists/188375708312" target="_blank">Facebook page for SketchUp Artists</a>: The Twilight rendering application now has a free version available. (Not that the Pro version is so pricey - it's just $99.)<br />
<br />
The free version is called "Hobby" and can be <a href="http://www.twilightrender.com/index.php/downloads/upgrade/66-about-v2/164-windows-v2" target="_blank">downloaded here</a>. (For some reason I had trouble accessing this web page from Twilight's home page, but the link from SketchUp Artists worked.) <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YODfvLRZj58/VEVhlYvsLfI/AAAAAAAACmM/mLFt1WLchtY/s1600/Twilight1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YODfvLRZj58/VEVhlYvsLfI/AAAAAAAACmM/mLFt1WLchtY/s1600/Twilight1.png" height="166" width="320" /></a> </div>
<br />
Rendering is most definitely not one of my specialties - I confess that the hundreds of options for backgrounds, lighting, and materials are overwhelming. (I also admit I haven't invested the time in learning the ins and outs of rendering; I'm sure it's not too crazy once you work through some tutorials.) So I appreciate when a program offers a one-click render option, like this one does.<br />
<br />
Here is the very simple example I tried:<br />
<br />
In searching for an interior design model, I found a cute model of the bedroom from the movie "Toy Story."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sdzkXldNnKs/VEVhlj7UDXI/AAAAAAAACnE/9W0uX4h7Uxo/s1600/Twilight2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sdzkXldNnKs/VEVhlj7UDXI/AAAAAAAACnE/9W0uX4h7Uxo/s1600/Twilight2.png" height="226" width="400" /></a></div>
The Twilight toolbar looks like this, and it should appear automatically after installing Twilight. The first icon performs the rendering, and the other icons handle lighting, environment (background, sun, haziness), materials, and field of view.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9tEAaT75xYk/VEVhl22FIQI/AAAAAAAACmU/Fz65Z-_TnBM/s1600/Twilight4.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9tEAaT75xYk/VEVhl22FIQI/AAAAAAAACmU/Fz65Z-_TnBM/s1600/Twilight4.png" /></a> </div>
<br />
Here's my first render, using the default settings. Looks good, except the brick wall isn't brick in the model.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4pzpAaNA-9E/VEVhljwUSjI/AAAAAAAACmQ/r_YsxuCxxOg/s1600/Twilight3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4pzpAaNA-9E/VEVhljwUSjI/AAAAAAAACmQ/r_YsxuCxxOg/s1600/Twilight3.png" height="212" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
From my experience with 3D printing, I know that the fronts and backs of faces matter, and in this case it looks like the wall with the window was showing its back face. A common mistake, and easy to miss when your faces are painted! It's also easy to fix in SketchUp - you can just reverse faces. Here's the lovely new render.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B4uViEjFcZE/VEVhmN0ARGI/AAAAAAAACmc/ixfAgyd0dQc/s1600/Twilight5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B4uViEjFcZE/VEVhmN0ARGI/AAAAAAAACmc/ixfAgyd0dQc/s1600/Twilight5.png" height="213" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The faces are all rendered with the materials as defined in SketchUp. Like any respectable renderer, Twilight has many other material options you can choose from. The 4th icon in the Twilight toolbar opens the material settings, and you can use the eyedropper to pick up any material in the SketchUp model. Here's the floor's wood material. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k-aMMKnXptE/VEVhmX6T6HI/AAAAAAAACmg/-KJOEPSAq-U/s1600/Twilight6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k-aMMKnXptE/VEVhmX6T6HI/AAAAAAAACmg/-KJOEPSAq-U/s1600/Twilight6.png" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I changed the floor material to a solid color (red!), and its bump to the "Procedural" method. The texture I chose is called Perlin. I don't know what this all means, but it looks cool. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SQXu4kbvpvs/VEVhmryPwpI/AAAAAAAACmo/1Xq6inJjDCw/s1600/Twilight7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SQXu4kbvpvs/VEVhmryPwpI/AAAAAAAACmo/1Xq6inJjDCw/s1600/Twilight7.png" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And here's the new floor, which actually looks a bit like shag carpet. This looks like a place Andy would feel at home in. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e8CdLeH-Abw/VEVhmw1MCQI/AAAAAAAACms/ItkY0HYPWBk/s1600/Twilight8.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e8CdLeH-Abw/VEVhmw1MCQI/AAAAAAAACms/ItkY0HYPWBk/s1600/Twilight8.png" height="216" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Download Twilight and try it on an exterior view of a house, a close-up of an appliance or a toy, or a landscape model. The renderings work pretty quickly, depending on the quality you choose, and you'll easily create some beautiful images.

In addition to showing how to use this feature, Matt mentions what types of models could benefit from it, such as when you want to differentiate existing from new construction:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mastersketchup.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/demo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.mastersketchup.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/demo.jpg" height="213" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In Matt's post he also includes a list of valuable tips for this feature, like how you can use translucent colors, and make a temporary color change to identify objects that may be on incorrect layers. <br />
<br />
I thought here I would show a very simple example of what Color by Layer looks like. I modeled a very basic table, whose top is a group, legs are identical components, and the two aprons are also components.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4bjDHgxdNtM/VEUnrhP3GiI/AAAAAAAACls/1q4tr3c3gWc/s1600/ColorByLayer1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4bjDHgxdNtM/VEUnrhP3GiI/AAAAAAAACls/1q4tr3c3gWc/s1600/ColorByLayer1.png" height="153" width="400" /></a> <br />
In the <b>Layers </b>window I added three layers - one each for aprons, legs, and tabletop. Each layer has its own color, which could be changed by clicking the color square.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dq_5cH9gojU/VEUnrsm3CKI/AAAAAAAAClk/H2JYh_qIOk8/s1600/ColorByLayer2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dq_5cH9gojU/VEUnrsm3CKI/AAAAAAAAClk/H2JYh_qIOk8/s1600/ColorByLayer2.png" height="184" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Objects are assigned to layers in the<b> Entity Info</b> window. But in this view, it's impossible to tell which objects are assigned where - all objects are painted with the same wood material.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XKPWKd_dG50/VEUnrvxT5gI/AAAAAAAAClo/idfftL__11I/s1600/ColorByLayer3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XKPWKd_dG50/VEUnrvxT5gI/AAAAAAAAClo/idfftL__11I/s1600/ColorByLayer3.png" height="270" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To view each object in its layer's color, use the <b>Styles </b>window: Click the <b>Edit </b>tab, open the <b>Modeling</b> settings, and click <b>Color by Layer</b>. (You can also do this in the <b>Layers </b>window, by toggling on and off the <b>Color by Layer</b> option in the menu that appears when you click the <b>Details </b>arrow.)<br />
<br />
That's it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7IuT6FCXyro/VEUnsWgbYdI/AAAAAAAACl8/Ty5_pDkJ2bs/s1600/ColorByLayer4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7IuT6FCXyro/VEUnsWgbYdI/AAAAAAAACl8/Ty5_pDkJ2bs/s1600/ColorByLayer4.png" height="250" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
For example, I wasn't organized enough to save all of my failed prints (there were quite a few and I just tossed them). But Matt did, and he proudly displays them in his post:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mastersketchup.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/1_FAILEDPRINTS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.mastersketchup.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/1_FAILEDPRINTS.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Many of his tips are ones I discovered myself while writing my <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SSS_3DP_Basics_PDF.html" target="_blank">SketchUp for 3D Printing</a> book, such as leaving enough tolerance for interacting parts, printing test runs to make sure interacting parts will fit, rounding corners for extra stability and strength. Other tips are more technical, like checking G-code manually. (I generally left the G-code writing to the printer itself.)<br />
<br />
One of his tips that I hadn't thought of before has to do with grain direction - the angle the printer uses when laying down each layer. Generally printers will place one layer using a diagonal grain, the next layer using a diagonal grain in the opposite direction, repeat. These joints between layers can become a point of weakness and lead to warping. For optimal strength, Matt says:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
A way to overcome this potential problem is to simply <b>orient your model
so that the X/Y axis plane is where you need the most strength</b>. Layers
print in the Z axis direction. Continuous extruion happens along the
X/Y axis plane, so they are stronger. </blockquote>
<br />
Useful stuff! If you have a 3D printer, be sure to<a href="http://www.mastersketchup.com/design-considerations-3d-printing/" target="_blank"> check out Matt's advice</a>.

The connection quality wasn't perfect, and there are some disconnects between audio and video in spots, but overall it seems pretty clear (I think!)<br />
<br />
What I showed was how to use SketchUp to create a basic nameplate with rounded corners and engraved text. Also covered: making sure the model is watertight, installing and using the STL plugin, and some Q&A at the end.<br />
<br />
Similar projects are detailed in my book <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SSS_3DP_Basics_PDF.html" target="_blank">Modeling with SketchUp for 3D Printing</a>. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">(<b>NOTE:</b> due to a glitch there's a delay at the start - things don't get going until about 4 minutes in.)</span><br />

I'm very honored to be taking part in their very first webinar.<br />
<br />
The project I'm planning to show will demonstrate a few basic SketchUp tools: Rectangle, Arc, Push/Pull, 3D Text, and Scale. I'll also show how to use the STL plugin to export your model into a 3D print-friendly format.<br />
<br />
If you can't tune it, the recording will be archived, and I'll provide the link to that when it's ready.<br />
<br />
See you then!

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Hello there! I am Henning from Germany and I do a little string art in my
spare time. I've been doing this for quite a while now and my projects
became bigger and bigger. Now when you do a string art project that's 5
meters in diameter, filling a whole room, it becomes complicated
imagining it, sketching it, or playing around with colours and patterns. (This is for the ceiling of a Psy
Trance party, that I host with my crew.) I was looking for a way to visualize it on my PC to be able to play
around and easily erase/change patterns. So when I was looking at SketchUp, which I was unfamiliar with at the time, I stumbled upon your
"Project of the Month" from March 2011. It helped me a great deal with
getting started in SketchUp, especially with the tools I need to produce string art. Now I would like to share my project with you, if you like.
It came out really nice! Again a big THANK YOU and a hug from across the big pond!</blockquote>
<br />
Here's a shot of his finished project:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tgbr9_Q147E/U81Mb38N8xI/AAAAAAAACjM/ZWrFHj2UAyU/s1600/StringArt5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tgbr9_Q147E/U81Mb38N8xI/AAAAAAAACjM/ZWrFHj2UAyU/s1600/StringArt5.jpg" height="223" width="400" /></a> </div>
<br />
I don't hit a lot of trance parties these days, but I'd go to this one if it were a little closer to home :)<br />
<br />
I asked to see Henning's SketchUp model and it's great! Here's the initial view, with a hip, black background and SketchUp 2014's defauilt person (Sophie) on the ground. She's good for providing a sense of scale. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kUWp1iVnvak/U81Map94Q6I/AAAAAAAACi0/hfd7ob3yhCs/s1600/StringArt1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kUWp1iVnvak/U81Map94Q6I/AAAAAAAACi0/hfd7ob3yhCs/s1600/StringArt1.png" height="233" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the front view, where you can see that the middle part slopes toward a lower center point, and the rest is flat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-spBUFS_itK4/U81MakO1nbI/AAAAAAAACiw/ZfFqxnqWoJw/s1600/StringArt2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-spBUFS_itK4/U81MakO1nbI/AAAAAAAACiw/ZfFqxnqWoJw/s1600/StringArt2.png" height="185" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I separated the three levels of objects to give a better sense of how the model is set up: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7cS5QhRgtvo/U81Map_lThI/AAAAAAAACjI/M4NI-4kN7K4/s1600/StringArt3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7cS5QhRgtvo/U81Map_lThI/AAAAAAAACjI/M4NI-4kN7K4/s1600/StringArt3.png" height="220" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Henning made perfect use of components. In each of the three layers, there are components that are mirrored and rotate-copied about the center, to fill in the rest. Here's one of these components, where you can see the lines that stretch between the dividing points along each straight edge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Wldwo3OCJY/U81MbPvLMcI/AAAAAAAACi4/5uKqPLWPMQU/s1600/StringArt4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Wldwo3OCJY/U81MbPvLMcI/AAAAAAAACi4/5uKqPLWPMQU/s1600/StringArt4.png" height="228" width="400" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tgbr9_Q147E/U81Mb38N8xI/AAAAAAAACjM/ZWrFHj2UAyU/s1600/StringArt5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>
<br />
If you're wondering about the edge and background colors, these are set in the Styles window (menu: Window / Styles). On the Edge page of the Edit tab, you can set the edge color to "By Material." And on the "Background" page you can set background color, which then turns otherwise black edges to white (check out Sophie).<br />
<br />
Here's one more shot of the finished product, which includes one of the surrounding mirror. Don't you want to go and hear some wild music now? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DVqFeI04ysQ/U81McI10elI/AAAAAAAACjU/rvFsgePEq7M/s1600/StringArt6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DVqFeI04ysQ/U81McI10elI/AAAAAAAACjU/rvFsgePEq7M/s1600/StringArt6.jpg" height="223" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Thanks Henning - our "cool" factor has just gone up :)

College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Last week, Jorge sent me a link to an easy-to-follow <a href="http://www.renderplus.com/wp2/wk/IRender_nXt_Interior_Pool_Tutorial.htm" target="_blank">rending tutorial</a> that he created for his CAD SketchUp class. The rendering application he used is <a href="http://www.renderplus.com/wp2/irender-information/" target="_blank">IRender nXt</a>, which has a 30-day, fully functional trial version.<br />
<br />
Even if you're not planning to purchase an application like this, it's a great opportunity to learn step-by-step the basic mechanics of how to render a SketchUp model. Once you get the techniques, they can usually be applied to other applications. Give it a try!<br />
<br />
The SketchUp model Jorge starts with is an interior pool (nice!) with SketchUp's usual cartoony look.<br />
<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/embed.html?mid=u372a28bb-d3fe-46b4-911a-42dd40b59d98&width=400&height=300" width="400"></iframe>
<br />
He starts with a one-click render, without adjusting settings or adding lights, which only takes a couple of minutes and looks pretty good:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/0/07/Figure_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/0/07/Figure_4.jpg" height="260" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The tutorial proceeds to show how to add lights (a table lamp, a floor light, a spotlight above the fireplace, some wall sconces) and how to apply light properties to SketchUp objects (the dome light of a ceiling fan, fire in the fireplace). Pretty stunning so far:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/8/84/Figure_23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/8/84/Figure_23.jpg" height="260" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then you learn about the finishing touches: playing with the reflective properties of the water, making the pool tiles a bit bumpy, making plastic and metal and glass look realistic, making mirrors reflect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/7/72/Figure_31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/7/72/Figure_31.jpg" height="283" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/1/18/Figure_36.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/1/18/Figure_36.jpg" height="299" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the final rendering, before and after the final adjustments:<u> </u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/5/57/Figure_37-adjustments.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/5/57/Figure_37-adjustments.jpg" height="400" width="395" /></a></div>
<br />
The tutorial ends with info on how to adjust the camera view,change the field of view, and create an animation.<br />
<br />
If you've ever wanted to try your hand at rendering, <a href="http://www.renderplus.com/wp2/wk/IRender_nXt_Interior_Pool_Tutorial.htm" target="_blank">Jorge's tutorial</a> is a great way to start!<br />

<br />
Matt's <a href="http://www.mastersketchup.com/" target="_blank">MasterSketchUp</a> site is mainly a blog with a wealth of modeling tips and tricks. (His latest offering, for example, focuses on how you can approximate an AutoCAD XREF in SketchUp. No, you can't link an external object that will update automatically, but SketchUp has a "Reload" feature - the next best thing.) He also provides links to some nice (and free!) videos and tutorials.<br />
<br />
Matt's commercial site is <a href="https://getdpd.com/cart/hoplink/19405?referrer=jo8eoll99b4kw0co80" target="_blank">SketchUp to LayOut</a>, where he sells his "SketchUp to LayOut" packages. And these materials are all fully updated for SketchUp 2014!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sketchuptolayout.com/images/3DBook.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.sketchuptolayout.com/images/3DBook.png" /></a></div>
There are three packages on offer, which you can view at the very bottom of the <a href="https://getdpd.com/cart/hoplink/19405?referrer=jo8eoll99b4kw0co80" target="_blank">SketchUp to LayOut</a> page: <br />
<ul>
<li>The <b>Basic Package</b> contains the 288 page e-book.</li>
<li>The <b>Professional Package</b> includes the book, plus an assortment of materials, hatch patterns, templates, styles, and LayOut scrapbooks. This package also includes discounts for other plugins and tutorials.</li>
<li>The <b>Video Course</b> includes all of the above, plus over three hours of instructional video you can stream or download. </li>
</ul>
If you're wondering why I'm plugging Matt's materials when <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SU2013LayOutPDF.html" target="_blank">I have a soon-to-be-updated LayOut book of my own</a>, there are two reasons. Matt's book and videos focus on tips and tricks and best practices, whereas my book contains start-to-finish, hands-on exercises. The second reason - I'm an affiliate reseller of Matt's materials!<br />
<br />
So please click on over to <a href="https://getdpd.com/cart/hoplink/19405?referrer=jo8eoll99b4kw0co80" target="_blank">SketchUp to LayOut</a> and check out what Matt's got!<br />

But I recently received a lovely package from mathematician and artist Cye Waldman (<a href="http://3dvinci.blogspot.com/2014/04/math-is-beautiful.html" target="_blank">whom I blogged about before</a>) who's a fan of our <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-catshow/GM_PDF.html" target="_blank">GeomeTricks books</a>. <br />
<br />
The package contained two sets of beautiful and sturdy cards with a variety of geometric patterns on them. The cards are really striking, printed on black cardstock (the insides are white), and come with matching black envelopes.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here's one set of 7 cards, based mostly on patterns of triangles and hexagons. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-902VsHaE7YA/U6Ch5kxstZI/AAAAAAAACiA/l2CUZMMj5W4/s1600/photo+5%2834%29.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-902VsHaE7YA/U6Ch5kxstZI/AAAAAAAACiA/l2CUZMMj5W4/s1600/photo+5(34).JPG" height="216" width="400" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On the back of each card is a pattern name and explanation of how the tessellation was made.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wO-AZeB8u0U/U6CfrB_C6vI/AAAAAAAAChc/_WUhnMsqGgo/s1600/photo+5%2834%29.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
This one is my favorite, called "Medusa." It's created from triskelion (three-legged figure, who knew?) logarithmic spirals.</div>

And these apps can vary greatly in price as well as learning curve.<br />
<br />
I was asked recently to review a very simple renderer for SketchUp called <a href="https://getvisualizer.com/" target="_blank">Visualizer</a>, which is a neat little program. I used the free trial version, but the paid version is only $19.99, the least expensive renderer I've seen.
And the photo area works right inside SketchUp, in real time.<br />
<br />
Here's the first example I tried - a SketchUp model of a simple set of toy blocks I downloaded from the 3D Warehouse. As always, the model has a cartoon-like feel in SketchUp, even with edges turned off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3Bs97PRH_-w/U5IkNPHcZ2I/AAAAAAAACf8/QYYhwqEGJXI/s1600/Viz01.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3Bs97PRH_-w/U5IkNPHcZ2I/AAAAAAAACf8/QYYhwqEGJXI/s1600/Viz01.png" height="253" width="320" /></a></div>
After you install Visualizer, you should see its icon right there in SketchUp:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AoDevlWlu-s/U5IkNGLfq1I/AAAAAAAACfw/tx5g57AUAfs/s1600/Viz02.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AoDevlWlu-s/U5IkNGLfq1I/AAAAAAAACfw/tx5g57AUAfs/s1600/Viz02.png" /></a></div>
Click the icon, and the photo area appears right on top of the SketchUp window. (The Visualizer actually appears above ALL windows, until you minimize it.) This simple model took only a few seconds to cycle through the levels of pixelation and the result is pretty sharp - the rendering does indeed have a rather photo-like feel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CRtGsmMZjJA/U5IkNIX4AlI/AAAAAAAACf0/eRKg2-nURMg/s1600/Viz03.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CRtGsmMZjJA/U5IkNIX4AlI/AAAAAAAACf0/eRKg2-nURMg/s1600/Viz03.png" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
You can change the view in SketchUp and the rendering will update as well. Though for a complex or heavy model the rendering takes time, so there is an option to lock the image until you're ready to "take the photo." To save a rendering, you just click the large shutter icon at the bottom center.<br />
<br />
Here's the next one I tried, a house with trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U0gSCT9R4_o/U5IkNnp9SbI/AAAAAAAACgY/ytEOHmVjXqM/s1600/Viz04.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U0gSCT9R4_o/U5IkNnp9SbI/AAAAAAAACgY/ytEOHmVjXqM/s1600/Viz04.png" height="205" width="320" /></a></div>
And here's the render, which took about two 2 minutes. It's hard to see in this image, but there is still some grainy pixelation, particularly in the shadowy areas, but for a presentation this makes a lovely image, complete with realistic-looking shadows.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2wIGdqZAMW0/U5ImvkfdvAI/AAAAAAAACg0/3Sm9r3FStGQ/s1600/Viz08.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2wIGdqZAMW0/U5ImvkfdvAI/AAAAAAAACg0/3Sm9r3FStGQ/s1600/Viz08.png" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NFLimOSOYIA/U5Il-DkiFOI/AAAAAAAACgw/UPBw3LkbjF4/s1600/VIZ_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
The shadows are controlled by SketchUp's Shadow Settings window (Window / Shadows), where you can set the time of year and day. The image above is mid-day, full sun, and I wanted to try a darker time, like a winter afternoon. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LxOl0pEXUkw/U5IkN087JTI/AAAAAAAACgA/hwWTMWZZ21k/s1600/Viz05.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LxOl0pEXUkw/U5IkN087JTI/AAAAAAAACgA/hwWTMWZZ21k/s1600/Viz05.png" /></a></div>
Here's the image this time. The sky still looks light, but the shadows are time-appropriate. (I tried going later in the day and into the night but those results were a little strange - the sky turned yellow and then dark blue.) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hpp5KpXDPt0/U5IkOVR1RmI/AAAAAAAACgE/ihAyTI6sh5w/s1600/Viz06.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hpp5KpXDPt0/U5IkOVR1RmI/AAAAAAAACgE/ihAyTI6sh5w/s1600/Viz06.png" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
Another nice feature is focus. At the lower right is a slider to control the background blur, and the "bulls-eye" icon on the picture itself sets the center of focus. So I was able to focus on the front door while leaving the farther parts of the house, including the trees, a bit blurry.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SJqd0wVyXOI/U5IkQTSmdAI/AAAAAAAACgg/bnIqRR2qyiU/s1600/Viz07.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SJqd0wVyXOI/U5IkQTSmdAI/AAAAAAAACgg/bnIqRR2qyiU/s1600/Viz07.png" height="241" width="320" /></a></div>
So if you're looking for an easy to use rendering application that won't set you back and cost hours of training, <a href="https://getvisualizer.com/" target="_blank">Visualizer </a>is a good one to try!<br />

Sketchy Physics enables you to assign physical properties to SketchUp objects, so that they can move, crash, fall, roll, bounce, you name it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodlg/GetMovingWithSketchyPhysics_Cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodlg/GetMovingWithSketchyPhysics_Cover.jpg" height="320" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
Today I'm releasing the <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SketchyPhysics1_PDF.html" target="_blank">updated version</a> of the book!<br />
<br />
No, this doesn't mean the Sketchy Physics plugin has been updated. The<a href="https://code.google.com/p/sketchyphysics/downloads/list" target="_blank"> most recent Sketchy Physics version</a> (still from 2010) works only in SketchUp 8. We've been waiting and hoping for an update for SketchUp 2013, then 2014, and now it seems like there are a few snags affecting the update. So while we continue to wait...<br />
<br />
<b>You actually don't have to wait!</b><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.sketchup.com/download/all" target="_blank">You can still get the free version of SketchUp 8</a>, and you can have SketchUp 8 installed and running alongside either more recent version. So there's nothing stopping you from trying out Sketchy Physics. It's fun, educational, and quite addictive - be prepared for some late nights!<br />
<br />
Here's a short (~8 minute) video showing you all of the projects in the book. Fun stuff!<br />

I heard that 250,000 were expected to attend, and that that number was actually exceeded. It's by far the biggest show I ever saw, with five enormous hangar-sized rooms full of rockets, chemisty experiments, math games, stage performances, you name it. And of course, lots and lots of 3D printing! You'd need three full days to see it all.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vHJXsDxNp1A/U16mD3hknOI/AAAAAAAACdk/TjS8IIPW51o/s1600/IMAG0048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vHJXsDxNp1A/U16mD3hknOI/AAAAAAAACdk/TjS8IIPW51o/s1600/IMAG0048.jpg" height="361" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I was there with my <a href="http://www.afinia.com/" target="_blank">Afinia </a>printer, showing how easy it is to take a SketchUp model into a printer. The second most popular model was the Lego bunk beds, but in the shuffle of the crowds, each one I printed out managed to get stolen (the nerve!) before I could take pictures. But I did have a couple left of the MOST popular model - an elephant whose legs actually move. (You can find this model <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:257911" target="_blank">on Thingiverse</a>.) People didn't believe it was a single print, and I myself hadn't seen something like this before!<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vy8nnYQzpoo/U16mudqDx_I/AAAAAAAACds/P4H0DPrAgVQ/s1600/photo+1%2862%29.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vy8nnYQzpoo/U16mudqDx_I/AAAAAAAACds/P4H0DPrAgVQ/s1600/photo+1(62).JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a> <br />
With the Afinia I was able to create the striped version easily.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GDQUfaap1Hg/U16n53Mx86I/AAAAAAAACd4/njZW5VpLgoc/s1600/photo+2(61).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GDQUfaap1Hg/U16n53Mx86I/AAAAAAAACd4/njZW5VpLgoc/s1600/photo+2(61).JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vy8nnYQzpoo/U16mudqDx_I/AAAAAAAACds/P4H0DPrAgVQ/s1600/photo+1(62).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
If you print this yourself, watch out - the trunk breaks off easily. I'm spending today printing out a few of these for my family.<br />
<br />
The printer worked like a champ all weekend. It was running pretty much without a break all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and other than a couple of recalibration, needed no maintenance. All I did today was clean the nozzle and clear out the gears. It even traveled well in my rolling suitcase.<br />
<br />
It was a great show, and I hope to do it again next year! I also hope to join SketchUp at some upcoming Maker Faires.<br />

(The first book is <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SSS_3DP_Basics_PDF.html" target="_blank">Modeling with SketchUp for 3D Printing</a>.) <br />

<br />
<br />
This book is an updated version of the book I wrote for Pearson Press back in 2011, when SketchUp 8 was current. This book is changed a bit and updated for SketchUp 2014. (If you're working with an earlier version of SketchUp, the projects in the book still work the same way; only a few icons have changed.)<br />
<br />
If you're an instructor, the book works perfectly as a textbook. Each section contains a step-by-step project, followed by a "Model It Yourself" project that reinforces concepts, and can be used as class or home assignments. There are 40 of these projects. And each chapter comes with a set of review questions.<br />
<br />
What's covered in this book? <a href="http://3dvinci.net/ModelingWithSketchUpForInteriorDesign_Contents.pdf" target="_blank">You can see the entire book's contents here</a>, and here is a list of topics: <br />
<ul>
<li>Modeling an empty room</li>
<li>Furnishing a room with 3D Warehouse models, correcting common model errors</li>
<li>Modeling furniture from scratch (straight and curved pieces including tables, sofas, cabinets)</li>
<li>Working with colors and materials (changing base colors, resizing, texture positioning)</li>
<li>Working with digital images ("free pin" positioning, tracing, modeling based on a photo)</li>
<li>Kitchen design (dynamic components, cabinet plans, counters and sinks)</li>
<li>Model presentation (layers and scenes, presenting multiple design or material options, walk-throughs)</li>
<li>Working drawings (labels, dimensions, plans)</li>
<li>Additional resources (tutorials, models, rendering applications)</li>
</ul>
If you're an instructor and you're interested in viewing an evaluation PDF of this book, <a href="mailto:bonnie@3dvinci.net" target="_blank">please email us to receive a copy</a>. Be sure to let us know where and what you teach.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/ccp0-prodshow/SSS_InteriorDesign_PDF.html" target="_blank">Here's the link again</a> for this great new book. Enjoy! <br />

I got these from Cye Waldman, a retired engineer who's been doing mathematical modeling for over 40 years. The images below weren't created in SketchUp (he uses Matlab), but he just got one of my books to learn how to make them in SketchUp.<br />
<br />
Here are some of his Voderberg patterns:<br />

By
way of introduction, I’m a retired engineer/physicist/mathematician

do all my work in the complex plane, it really simplifies things. This
morning I undertook to model Voderberg tiling. I parameterized it in
terms of two angles and calculated all nine arm lengths. (Actually, I
start out by taking one of them to be unity.) Well, one of the angles <i>must</i>
be 12 degrees and the other is limited to ~111-153 degrees without
lines crossing. Thus, with 20 lines of code I have a generalized
Voderberg tile. The material in your book helped me proceed further very
quickly. Especially the tile sets required for the outer rings. I also
found that I could use the conjugate tiles to good advantage and that I
could construct an ordinary rectangular tiling as well. This tiling
gives me access to any of the wild transformations you see at the Web
site. The computation of tiling takes about 0.02
seconds and then another 0.2 seconds to render.<br />

Cye also can tile those Voderbergs linearly:<br />

Lastly, here's his Hirschhorn 72-degree tile.<br />

Cye's five interior angles, which would be a bit cumbersome to enter in SketchUp are:

D=108<br />
E=127.9454393208759<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodlg/3DPrintingCover.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodlg/3DPrintingCover.png" height="320" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
I've put many of the models from the book online for anyone to download for free. (Though of course the idea is for you to use the book to learn how to make these models on your own!)<br />
<br />
In case you haven't looked yet, <a href="http://3dvinci.net/ModelingWithSketchUpFor3DPrinting_Sampler.pdf" target="_blank">here is a summary of all of the models in the book</a>. If you want something from this summary that doesn't appear on the download list below, please let me know and I'll add it. <br />
<br />
You can find these download models on a relatively new website: <a href="http://3dfilemarket.com/" target="_blank">http://3dfilemarket.com</a>. This UK-based site was set up recently by high school teacher Phil Cotton, who found me via the<a href="http://3dprintingindustry.com/2014/03/26/3d-printing-with-sketchup-book/" target="_blank"> book release announcement from 3D Printing Industry</a>.<br />
<br />
<div>
Here's what Phil wrote when he contacted me about getting my models on his site: </div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
My background in 3D printing stems
from teaching it in school, and then winning a 3D Print Show Award for
Educational Excellence. Before this I was a Industrial Design graduate
from Loughborogh University in the UK. As a hobby I was designing for
Cubify, and when they ended their marketplace I wanted somewhere else to
host my models. Also, I had shown
my high school CAD students that they could get paid for good models, so
it turned into
an enterprise / business aspect of teaching. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div>
I can see your book becoming a
very big educational feature - students will be able to self-teach at
home at their own pace, and not be constrained by lesson
timings. Independent learning is a massive thing many student lack at
the moment.</div>
</blockquote>
<div>
So here are the links to download my models:<br />

Here it is:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodlg/3DPrintingCover.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.3dvinci.net/media/ccp0/prodlg/3DPrintingCover.png" height="320" width="247" /></a></div>
The projects in this book demonstrate tools, techniques, and the essential plugins you'll need to design and print fabulous models you can actually hold in your hand. These models can be sent to any 3D printer; the only limit is your imagination.<br />
<br />
As always, we've got it in <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/index.php?ns=prodshow&ref=SSS_3DP_Basics_PDF" target="_blank">PDF format</a> as well as <a href="http://www.3dvinci.net/index.php?ns=prodshow&ref=SSS_3DP_Basics_Print" target="_blank">color print</a>.<br />
<br />
And as always, we've got a <a href="http://3dvinci.net/ModelingWithSketchUpFor3DPrinting_Sampler.pdf" target="_blank">Sampler PDF</a> so you can check out each and every project I've demonstrated in the book.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3dvinci.blogspot.com/2014/02/3d-printing-keeping-me-busy.html" target="_blank">My blog post from last month</a> showed a few of the projects from the book. And just as I was ready to wrap things up, my daughter asked for a DNA model for school. So here's that one - the last project in the book (and my favorite):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niKP9q5nUp0/UycmrFk0eBI/AAAAAAAACbM/ahwI-m6SSsE/s1600/DNA09.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niKP9q5nUp0/UycmrFk0eBI/AAAAAAAACbM/ahwI-m6SSsE/s1600/DNA09.png" height="320" width="143" /></a></div>
<br />
As you might have noticed on the cover image, this book is part of the new "SketchUp Specialties Series" (the first book, actually). More
in this series are planned, including collaborative books on SketchUp
for interior design, film / stage, kitchens / baths, and more.<br />

I complete one thing, then get an idea for another, then spend hours printing, rinse, repeat.<br />
<br />
Here are some of my favorite projects - all of these (and much more!) will be included in my book.<br />
<br />
My kids insisted that I show this one first, since it was their design request: Lego bunk beds.<br />

And here are some more, representing just a bit of what I've been doing. <br />
